Did you know the Door County Half Marathon & Nicolet Bay 5K, which is on May 7, 2022, is the unofficial kick-off weekend to the summer season in Door County? Many establishments that are closed for the winter reopen especially for this weekend. Spring is in full bloom this time of year, and while Memorial Day Weekend is the official kick-off to summer, this is the weekend many Door County establishments – shops, restaurants, lodging – are open and ready to welcome all our summer visitors to the area.

If you’re a runner it’s an especially great weekend in Door County. The Half Marathon and 5K are run on a beautiful course through Peninsula State Park. The idea for this race was drafted at a breakfast table at the very popular Al Johnson’s in Sister Bay. A little more than a year after the discussion, in 2008, the first race was run with 581 runners. Now 2,500 runners sign up and enjoy the race through the park. Many local restaurants and bars have special menus and events scheduled for your preparation, recovery, and enjoyment.
This is a great weekend for everyone in the family to enjoy. It also fills up incredibly fast – so booking in advance is always a good idea.
