Are you a bargain hunter, always on the prowl for something you just can’t live without that you find at resale shops? Sister Bay has become a destination for “junkers” who have been known to score some really fine things. Thrift stores in Sister Bay are true treasure troves, where you’ll discover secondhand clothes, old furniture begging for a DIY project, some original and print art work by noted Door County fine artists and sculptors, or even a hidden designer clothing label or two. The thrill of the hunt keeps the best thrift stores thriving, not to mention giving those of us who live here a place to donate our own gently used goods. Those patient enough to sort through the inventory at these stores should be prepared to score some serious deals on items you simply can’t find at most other clothing stores, furniture stores or gift shops. When you stay at Birchwood Lodge, you can even walk to some of these wonderful resale shops. Right across the highway from Birchwood Lodge you’ll find Bargains Unlimited (open year round), whose earnings support Scandia Village Retirement Home. This is a favorite haunt for treasure seekers and carries anything and everything you may be searching for. Julie’s Upscale Resale (March through mid-November), across from the Country Walk Shops carries over 2000 consigners and some new items from local stores. “It’s a new store everyday!”, according to the manager. The Village Clothier (Spring through late fall) on the lower level of the Country Walk shops carries select, gently used (some with original tags still on them) women’s clothing items in a wide range of sizes, jewelry and fashion accessories. Second Hand Sue’s Resale and Consignment next to the Shell station downtown, is “a place where you’ll find the unexpected, the unusual, as well as everyday items”. Newly opened at the top of the hill on Highway 42 in the south end of the village is Reclaimed, which has salvage items, furniture and home decor items that you see on HGTV.
