Although Birchwood Lodge in Sister Bay has had computer access in most of the main lodge rooms for some time, past and prospective guests have often asked about wi-fi access in all of the units. This past summer season, that request was filled and we’re pleased to state that the entire main lodge, the restored Farmhouse and Village Homes now have wi-fi internet connection. For the business person who needs to stay in touch while on vacation, family memebers who want to check email or look-up local attractions, or kids who need that social networking connection, this free service is just another amenity that makes Birchwood Lodge so attractive. We’re also pleased to say that every unit has a new, queen size sleeper sofa. These stylish sleeper sofas, upholtered in high quality, attractive fabric, fit the decor of each room and provide comfortable seating and sleeping accommodations without the middle bar on the mattress frame. With these updates and additions, Birchwood Lodge is like “your home away from home” as you experience all that Door County has to offer.

There a many adjectives that perfectly describe Door County and all that it has to offer. Perhaps none is more fitting than being labelled “Cherry Capital of Wisconsin”. Now is a good time to head to the Birchwood Lodge in Sister Bay to enjoy the culture, nature and other attractions that Door County offers. A trip to one of the many farm markets and fruit stands is a must on your “to do list”, especially at this time. Seaquist Orchards Farm Market, which is just a short drive from Birchwood Lodge, has Morello early tart cherries for sale now and sweet cherries will be completely harvested in the next few weeks. Sample the tart or sweet cherries and you’ll want to take some home. While you’re at Seaquist’s Market, ask where you could see cherry trees being picked. You might observe pickers doing the harvesting by hand, or the automated “tree shakers” could be wrapped around the trees. Seaquist Orchards are located all around the county and you’re bound to find a scenic country road to find one on a short side trip. Though Wisconsin is known as The Dairy State, it could also be called The Cherry State, in Door County in July .

Each year, Birchwood Lodge in Sister Bay welcomes some foreign students as summer helpers on our Housekeeping Staff. Students this year are from Ukraine and Russia. Early Sunday morning, June 21, Stanislav (Stas) and Yulia from Russia, landed at La Guardia Airport in New York City for a few hours layover before the next parts of their journey to Chicago and then Green Bay. Naturally, they were exhausted from their long trip and they fell asleep in a waiting area with their bags nearby. They awoke later only to discover that their bags had been stolen with all of their clothes and all of the money their families provided for them. Fortunately, they had their passports on them. Scared, frutrated by the devastating loss and angered by this first unpleasant introduction to America, they continued on to complete their trip to Green Bay, where our General Manager finally retrieved them. He took them to his home where he and his wife immediately gave them clothes, food, and the comforting assurance that they would be all right. When news of this situation was made known to others in Door County the next day, the spirit of generosity and kindness of people here kicked in immediately for these kids. The Business Manager of the Stella Maris Parish in Northern Door contributed some of his own personal clothing for Stas, and the parish also provided monetary gift cards for them to use at the Piggly-Wiggly Store. Lions Club of Northern Door provided cash for their immediate needs. Joanne from Social Services of Door County put through vouchers from the Salvation Army so that they could purchase new clothing at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart in Sturgeon Bay offered them additional clothing vouchers. First Baptist Church in Sister Bay let them stock up on non-perishable food items from the Community Food Pantry. Anonymous donors provided more cash. Bargains Unlimited provided them with shoes, and the spirit of giving goes on and on. Stas and Yulia are overwhelmed by this outpouring of kindness and the smiles have returned to their faces. They are already working hard here, getting more adjusted day by day, and eager to see more of Door County, USA. Stas and Yulia wish to thank all of those individuals, business establishments, churches and service organizations for reaching out to them in a true spirt of friendship. Their first impressions of America may have been negative but they have formed a positive opinion now because of the people of Door County.

The Corner of the Past at Highway 57 and Fieldcrest Road is the Sister Bay Historical Society’s location (http://sisterbayhistory.org/ ) with a Farmer’s Market beginning Saturday, June 27th, continuing every Saturday through the summer with the final market day on October 10th. Drive south on Hwy 57 just a half mile from the Birchwood Lodge where you’ll find many farmer/vendors who sell fresh picked fruit, vegetables and flowers, all grown in Door County. You’ll also discover home made baked goods, special sauces, some souveniers from the Historical Society. Roberta Kutlik, Curator of the Museum and Manager of the Farmers Market said, “We’re proud of where we’ve come. We started with just a few vendors the first year and it has grown every year into the success that it is today.” While you’re there, tour some locally historic buildings that were also moved there. Be sure to stop at the big, gray barn where you might see and hear a special presentation by one of the local artisans. That barn is the original barn that once stood on the present site of Birchwood Lodge, which was the Koessel family farm. When the Birchwood Lodge developers purchased the farm , the barn was donated to the Sister Bay Historical Society. On a cold, snowy day in February, 2000, the barn was moved to its present location. Plan to visit this special place in Sister Bay. Why not bring home some freshly grown items from Door County for your own family and friends.

We are finally seeing proof of springtime coming to northern Door County! From the Sister Bay village park you can see the ice is almost melted and that warms all of our hearts. Sister Bay in the springtime is a perfect time to visit the Birchwood Lodge. We still feature winter rates so your getaway to Door County is not only nearby, but a good value as well.
So how about planning a weekend with us at the Birchwood. After your drive to northern Door on Friday night you can park your car and walk down the hill to enjoy a perch dinner at The Sister Bay Bowl. Afterwards you could even bowl a few rounds on their lanes to work off some of your dinner. Walk back to your guest room and get a good nights sleep after a soak in your in-room whirlpool.
Saturday morning can mean a walk to Sister Bay’s waterfront to check on that melting ice for yourself. Then stop by The Sister Bay Cafe for some Norweigian breakfast fare and steaming black coffee. Head back to your room and grab warm clothes for a hike in one of our many nearby parks - Newport State Park for example.
An afternoon in the fresh air tires you out a bit, so you head back for a quick nap before you head to the nearby grocery stores to pick up the makings for a romantic dinner. Your in-room kitchen is completely stocked with everything you need to dine in, so you decide dinner and a movie is what the night calls for. The Birchwood Lodge front desk has several DVD options for you to choose from.
After dinner you relax in front of the fireplace and vow to come back to the Birchwood Lodge again before the summer season begins!
